Brigadier General JOEL W. SAFRANEK

Brig. Gen. Joel W. Safranek is the Deputy Inspector General of the Department of the Air Force, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. The Inspector General reports to the Secretary of the Air Force, Air Force Chief of Staff, and Chief of Space Operations on the readiness, efficiency and military discipline of active duty, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard forces. The Inspector General provides inspection policy and oversees the inspection and evaluation system for all Air Force nuclear and conventional forces; oversees counterintelligence operations; investigates fraud, waste and abuse; oversees criminal investigations; and provides oversight of complaints resolution programs. The Inspector General is also responsible for three field operating agencies: the Air Force Inspection Agency, the Office of Special Investigations and the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center.

Brig. Gen. Safranek hails from Cave Creek, Arizona and received his commission from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1996. He has served in a variety of positions at the squadron, group and wing level, to include detachment, squadron and wing command. His headquarters staff assignments include duty at NORAD and U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Transportation Command, the Air Staff, and Air Force Material Command.

Brig. Gen. Safranek is a command pilot with over 3,500 hours and has been qualified as a Joint Task Force-Port Opening Commander, Title 10 Deputy dual status commander, Contingency Response Element commander and Director of Mobility Forces. He has deployed in support of operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Freedom’s Sentinel, Renewal of Hope, Resolute Support, Noble Eagle, Inherent Resolve and Deep Freeze.

Prior to this assignment, he was dual-hatted as Director, Air Force Security Assistance and Cooperation; and Director, International Affairs, Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
