The Prisoner of War Medal was authorized Nov. 8, 1985, and is awarded to anyone who was a prisoner of war after April 5, 1917, which is the date the United States entered World War One. The Prisoner of War Medal is awarded to those who were held captive or taken prisoner during any military conflicts or operations against enemies of the United States or while serving with allied forces.
