Operation Stabilise, East Timor map (b/w), U.S. Air Force graphic, AFNEWS/NSPD. In an effort to destabilize the upcoming vote for independence, Indonesian military and their militias conducted acts of terrorism against the people of East Timor. In September 1999, a multi-national military force, primarily from Australia and Britain, was sent to stop the violence and stabilize the country. This Military force was named INTERFET (International Force East Timor). During the period following the vote for independence, about 200 American troops were deployed in support of a multinational peacekeeping mission dubbed ‘Operation Warden.’ The United States Air Force provided C-5's, C-17's and C-130s to transport outsized cargo and helicopters into Darwin. East Timor became an independent nation on May 20, 2002.
