AF releases undergraduate flying training selections

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) -- The Air Force has selected 100 company grade officers for its 2017 Undergraduate Flying Training program.

The UFT annual selection board convened at the Air Force Personnel Center Jan. 23-26 to consider active-duty candidates for pilot, remotely piloted aircraft pilot, combat systems officer and air battle manager training.

“The board uses the ‘whole person’ concept to evaluate the measure of an applicant's aptitude for success in flying training,” said Maj. Travis Halleman, the UFT Board administrator. “Candidates are evaluated based on their officer performance record, pilot candidate selection method test score and Air Force officer qualification test score.”

Changes to this year’s board included the expansion of available undergraduate pilot training slots and a decrease in available undergraduate RPA pilot training slots.

“RPA training was definitely more competitive this year since more applicants requested RPA training as their number one choice and there was a noteworthy reduction in available slots from last year,” Halleman said. “There was also heavy expansion in RPA training Air Force-wide in addition to accessions growth within the community.”

RPA pilot candidates will attend training at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. Pilot training candidates will attend Euro-NATO Joint Jet pilot training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, or specialized undergraduate pilot training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi; Vance AFB, Oklahoma; Laughlin AFB, Texas; or Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Florida.

Those selected as air battle manager candidates will travel to Tyndall AFB, Florida, to attend training and combat systems officer candidates will head to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida.

“UFT selection is highly competitive and each year the makeup of the board can change significantly,” Halleman said. “Officers interested in UFT shouldn’t rely on previous year’s results when making the decision to apply. However, they should plan ahead if they intend to apply this fall when the call for applicants goes out.”
