Oct. 15 airpower summary: A-10s support ground forces

Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Oct. 15, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs dropped guided bomb unit-38s onto enemy fighters in a bunker in the Worzhanah Kalay area. The mission was confirmed successful by an on-scene joint terminal attack controller. 

In the vicinity of Bari Kowt, an A-10 dropped a GBU-38 onto enemy forces. A JTAC declared the mission successful. 

A-10s dropped GBU-38s onto hostile forces who were firing mortars and/or rockets at coalition forces near Asadabad. The mission was reported successful by a JTAC. 

In the vicinity of Nangalam, A-10s dropped GBU-38s onto enemies of Afghanistan who were directing small arms fire at friendly forces. A JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

Air Force F-15Es performed a show of force to deter enemy activities near Sheykhabad. The mission was declared successful by a JTAC.

Navy F/A-18F Super Hornets conducted shows of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Musa Qaleh and Sangin. The JTACs reported the missions successful. 

Coalition aircraft performed a show of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Tarin Kowt. The mission was confirmed successful by a JTAC. 

Navy F/A-18C Hornets conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities in the vicinity of Sangin.  A JTAC declared the mission successful. 

In total, 70 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. 

Sixteen Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 35 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. 

Twenty-five Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, three Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. 

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. 

Approximately 120 airlift sorties were flown, more than 420 tons of cargo delivered and more than 3,300 passengers were transported. This included approximately 60,000 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in Afghanistan. 

Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. 

On Oct. 14, Air Force and coalition tanker crews flew 57 sorties and off-loaded approximately 3.7 million pounds of fuel to 263 receiving aircraft.
