Sept. 13 airpower summary: A-10s destroy targets Published Sept. 14, 2008 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Sept. 13, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here. In Afghanistan, a Navy F/A-18C Hornet dropped a guided bomb unit-12 and a GBU-38 onto anti-Afghan firing positions near Musa Qala. The on-scene joint terminal attack controller declared the mission was successful. In the vicinity of Nangalam, an A-10 Thunderbolt II fired rockets and cannon rounds onto anti-Afghan fighting positions. Furthermore, an F-15E Strike Eagle dropped a GBU-31 onto anti-Afghan forces using small-arms fire against coalition forces in the same area. The missions were reported a success by a JTACs. An B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-38s, and a coalition aircraft dropped GBU-12s onto insurgent positions behind a tree line in the vicinity of Shurakian. A JTAC confirmed the mission was successful. Near Gardez, an A-10 conducted a show of force to provide armed aerial security patrol in the area. The missions were declared a success by a JTAC. Coalition aircrafts conducted shows of force to provide armed surveillance due to friendly forces receiving small-arms fire near Gereshk. The JTACs reported the missions were successful. In the vicinity of Sheykhabad, A-10s conducted shows of force to deter anti-Afghan activity in the area. The missions were confirmed a success by the JTACs. An F/A-18C conducted a show of force near Sangin and in the vicinity of Garmsir to provide armed aerial security patrol in the area. The JTACs declared the missions successful. In total, 74 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Seventeen Air Force and coalition intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. In Iraq, near Mosul and in the vicinity of Ad Diwaniyah, an F-16 Fighting Falcon conducted a show of force to deter enemy activity in the area. The missions were declared a success by the JTACs. In total, coalition aircraft flew 46 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Thirty Air Force, Navy, and coalition intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and coalition aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 138 airlift sorties were flown; 411 tons of cargo delivered, and 4,006 passengers were transported. This included approximately 91,500 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq. On Sept. 12, Air Force and coalition tanker crews flew 53 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.8 million pounds of fuel to 226 receiving aircraft.
