Aug. 1 airpower summary: Falcon takes out weapons cache

SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) --  Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and International Security Assistance Force troops in Afghanistan during operations Aug. 1, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Royal Air Force GR-9 Harriers fired rockets and dropped enhanced Paveway II munitions onto enemy forces near Delaram. An on-scene joint terminal attack controller reported the mission was successful.

Near Baghran, Navy F/A-18C Hornets dropped guided bomb unit-38s onto an enemy compound. Additionally, Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets dropped a GBU-12 and GBU-38s onto an enemy vehicle. The mission was declared successful by the JTAC.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped a GBU-12 and a GBU-31 onto enemy forces engaging coalition forces near Kandahar. The JTAC confirmed the mission wassuccessful.

F-15Es performed a show of force to deter anti-Afghan activities in the vicinity of Qarah Bagh. The mission was reported successful by the JTAC.

F/A-18Es conducted a show of force in the vicinity of Deh Chopan to deter anti-Afghan activities. The JTAC declared the mission successful.

F/A-18Cs performed shows of force to deter enemy activities near Baghran and in the vicinity of Gereshk. The missions were confirmed successful by the JTACs.

Navy F/A-18F Super Hornets conducted shows of force near Qalat and Gardez to deter enemy forces. The JTACs reported the missions were successful.

In total, 67 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Twelve Air Force and RAF intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, four Navy aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon dropped a GBU-38 onto a weapons cache near Baghdad. The mission was declared successful by the JTAC.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 21 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided overwatch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-seven Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 135 airlift sorties were flown, 387 tons of cargo were delivered and 2,288 passengers were transported. The airlift included approximately 50,240 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Iraq and Japan flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On July 31, Air Force and RAF aerial refueling crews flew 61 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.9 million pounds of fuel to 237 receiving aircraft.
