In the latest Letter to Airmen, the secretary of the Air Force discusses how a concerted effort towards modernizing the aging fleet will set the Air Force on a path to success.

"A few years ago we set out to recapitalize our aging fleet while maintaining the quality of life for our people and their families, winning the war on terror, and continuing to be the nation's strategic shield and sword," Secretary Michael W. Wynne said.  "This continues to be a daunting task as we are pushed and pulled towards a future we cannot always control."

"I want to report back to you that our modernization efforts are bearing fruit, but not at a rate that satisfies me," the secretary said.

Secretary Wynne said that despite modernization advances, the average age of the Air Force inventory continues to increase. There has been great progress in the number of aircraft available for operational missions. He also said that there has been progress with the establishment of Cyberspace Command as the Air Force comes to grips with the responsibilities in cyberspace.
