5-Star program recognizes Services' best

Eighty-seven fitness, library, outdoor recreation and golf programs were distinguished as Five Star for 2006 by Air Force Services Agency officials here, recognizing their high quality and trust.

The Five Star programs provide annual recognition, acknowledging those bases that have reached the highest standard of achievement in all aspects of program management, officials said. They added the comprehensive program recognizes excellence in the five areas of operations, programs, training, facilities and customer service.

The 30 Air Force bases achieving Five Star recognition in fitness were:

Beale, Travis and Vandenberg Air Force Bases, Calif.; 
Bolling AFB, D.C.;
Buckley and Peterson AFBs, Colo.;
Charleston AFB, S.C.;
Dyess, Laughlin and Sheppard AFBs, Texas;
Ellsworth AFB, S.D.;
Fairchild and McChord AFBs, Wash.;
F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo.;
Hill AFB, Utah;
Holloman AFB, N.M.;
Kadena Air Base, Japan;
Royal Air Force Lakenheath and Mildenhall, England;
Langley AFB, Va.;
Little Rock AFB, Ark.;
Luke AFB, Ariz.;
MacDill AFB, Fla.;
Maxwell AFB, Ala.;
Moody and Robins AFBs, Ga.;
Mountain Home AFB, Idaho;

The 19 Air Force bases achieving Five Star recognition in libraries were:

Lackland AFB, Texas;
Lajes Field, The Azores, Portugal;

The 18 Air Force bases achieving Five Star recognition in outdoor recreation were:

Hickam AFB, Hawaii;

The four Air Force bases achieving Five Star recognition in golf were:

Andrews AFB, Va.;
Kadena AB;
Luke AFB; and
Vandenberg AFB.

The 16 Air Force bases achieving Five Star recognition in aero clubs were:

Charleston AFB;
Dover AFB;
Edwards AFB; 
Eglin AFB;
Eielson and Elmendorf AFBs, Alaska;
Hanscom AFB;
Holloman and Kirtland AFBs, N.M.;
Kadena and Yokota ABs;
Osan AB, Korea;
Peterson AFB;
Scott AFB;
Tyndall AFB, Fla.; and
Wright-Patterson AFB.

In 1998, Air Force Services Agency realized the need for a formal fitness recognition program. As a result of combined efforts from base, major command and agency personnel, the Five Star Fitness Center Recognition Program was established in 2002.
 
Following the initial success of the program with fitness, libraries established their Five Star recognition program in 2003, followed by outdoor recreation, aero clubs and bowling in 2004, and golf in 2005.
