Iraq deployment opportunities open to federal civilians

  • Published
The Department of Defense needs DOD civilian volunteers to serve with the Department of State's provincial reconstruction teams in Iraq.

The PRTs are designed to promote security and economic development in Iraq and assist the Iraqi people in rebuilding and administering their country. A foreign service officer leads the teams, which will be comprised of servicemembers, foreign service officers, DOD civilians, other federal civilians and contractors. The period of service is nine to 12 months, although shorter periods of service may be considered.

According to DOD officials, Air Force civilians are encouraged to contribute their talent to this joint, integrated national security mission requirement. Team members are expected to bring back broader perspectives, critical experiences and a deeper understanding of their roles in support of DOD's expanding missions. The office of the secretary of defense expects to reimburse civilian pay costs.

Jobs include a variety of business specialties; Arabic language skills are particularly needed. A complete listing of positions and information about the requirements and benefits are at the civilian personnel management website, http://www.cpms.osd.mil/gwot.

Interested employees should submit a resume and an endorsement signed by their wing commander (or equivalent) to the Air Force Personnel Center at usafprt@randolph.af.mil by 4 p.m. CST on March 2. Endorsement forms may be downloaded at http://ww2.afpc.randolph.af.mil/resweb/default.htm.
