CENTAF releases airpower summary for Nov. 20

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Nov. 20.

In Afghanistan Nov. 19, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support for International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, troops in contact with Taliban extremists near Kandahar . The A-10s expended general purpose 500-pound bombs, guided bomb unit-12s and cannon rounds on enemy positions.

Air Force A-10s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Asadabad. The A-10s expended a GBU-12 and a general purpose 500-pound bomb on enemy positions.

U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets provided close air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Gereshk.

Navy F/A-18s provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Musa Qal'eh. The F/A-18s expended a GBU-12 on enemy positions.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer provided close-air support to ISAF troops in contact with enemy forces near Asadabad. The B-1B expended GBU-12s on enemy positions.

In total, 48 close-air-support missions were flown in support of ISAF and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Additionally, 10 Air Force and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan . U.S. Navy fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

In Iraq , U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18s conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces near Ramadi. One of the fighters expended a GBU-38 on enemy positions.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Muqdadiyah and Baghdad .

Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinities of At Ta'mim, Balad and Al Iskandariyah.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 32 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Additionally, 13 Air Force, Navy and RAF ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq . Air Force fighter aircraft performed in non-traditional ISR roles with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

On Nov. 18, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Two local national patients with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of these missions.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan , Iraq, and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 135 airlift sorties were flown; about 350 tons of cargo was delivered, and more than 3,200 passengers were transported. This included about 23,000 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in eastern Afghanistan .

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and Canada flew in support of OIF or OEF.

On Nov. 18, Air Force, RAF, French and Singaporean tankers flew 35 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
