Airman killed during combat operations in Iraq

Airman First Class Leebernard E. Chavis, assigned to the 732nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron, was killed by enemy gunfire Oct. 14 in the vicinity of Baghdad, Iraq.

Airman Chavis, age 21, was performing duties as a member of a U.S. military police training team supporting Iraqi police at the time of his death.

Airman Chavis was deployed here from the 23rd Wing, Moody Air Force Base, Ga.

The 732nd ESFS is part of the 732nd Expeditionary Mission Support Group under the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, headquartered at Balad Air Base, Iraq. 

Members from the 732nd ESFS held a patriation ceremony for Airman Chavis here Oct. 15. At the formation, Master Sgt. David Smith, 732nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron first sergeant, held the unit's home guidon of the 824th Security Forces Squadron, of which Airman Chavis was a member. After the formation, a C-130 Hercules carrying the remains of Airman Chavis began the journey home from Sather AB.
