Air Force rallies to tie San Diego State in conference opener

A pair of late goals sparked the Air Force women's soccer team to a 2-2 tie with San Diego State University Oct. 6 in Mountain West Conference action at the SDSU Sports Deck here. 

The tie brings the Falcons' record to 3-7-3, and 0-0-1 in conference play.

The Aztecs are at 4-7-1, 0-0-1. The tie snapped a five-game losing streak against SDSU for the Air Force. The Falcons are now unbeaten in their last three matches.

San Diego State took an early 1-0 lead in the 26th minute as Becky Ryan scored from 10 yards out. Erika Sutton was credited with the assist.

The Aztecs seemed to put the match away in the 47th minute as Jessica Girdner scored from 25 yards out to put SDSU ahead 2-0.

The Air Force got its break at the 71:55 mark with a penalty kick. Senior Brittney Perkowski scored on the kick to make it a 2-1 SDSU lead.

Just 64 seconds later, freshman Kelsey Yip scored her first career goal off an assist from senior Melinda Mokos, tying the match up at 2-2.

The two teams failed to score the rest of the match, which included two sudden-death overtime periods.

Air Force out-shot SDSU 11-10. Both teams had six shots on goal. Yip led the Falcons with four shots, two on goal. Sophomore Erin Wallace had four saves at goalkeeper for the academy while SDSU's Jill Foss had three.

The Falcons return to action Oct. 8 with a 1 p.m. game at Wyoming.
