The 45th Space Wing supported the successful launch of the Astra European telecommunications satellite on an Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 here at 4:27 p.m. April 20.

The wing provided Eastern Range and launch base support to Lockheed Martin and International Launch Services, who served as the commercial satellite and booster vehicle provider to the Astra Corporation.

Astra, a subsidiary of SES Global, is a corporation that owns and operates the Astra series of geostationary satellites. These transmit approximately 1,100 analog and digital television and radio channels via 176 transponders to 91 million households across Europe.

“The men and women of the 45th Space Wing once again demonstrated our ability to accomplish flawless and professional launch support for our mission partners and their customers,” wing commander Brig. Gen. Mark Owen said. “The 45th Space Wing has proven that Cape Canaveral AFS truly is the world’s premier gateway to space.”
