Schriever family members ‘deploy’ to fitness center Published Dec. 22, 2005 By Staff Sgt. Don Branum 50th Space Wing Public Affairs SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AFPN) -- About 60 Airmen and family members came to the base’s main fitness center recently for a three-hour “deployment.” Children moved through a processing line and received necklaces, certificates and hand-pressed buttons. Some went into the racquetball court to practice their marksmanship on skee-ball and basketball games, while others engaged in hand-to-hand combat against inflatable monkeys and giraffes. The activities were all part of the base’s inaugural deployed families’ dinner, held for Airmen who are going to deploy, their families and the family members of Airmen who are currently deployed. Airman 1st Class Allyn Carver said he volunteered to help with the deployed families’ dinner when he found out the family support center staff needed volunteers to help tear down afterward. Airman Carver is with the 4th Space Operations Squadron. Airmen from across the base served family members a dinner of turkey, corn, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other holiday treats. “It’s all about the people -- it really is,” said Master Sgt. Tim Brown, 4th SOPS first sergeant and one of the deployment dinner’s organizers. One of the dinner’s main goals was to bring families in and let them know they are welcome here. Col. Cal Hutto, the 50th SW vice commander, felt the same and offered the wing leaderships’ support to the deployed Airmen’s families. “Make sure you use the (FSC) services,” Colonel Hutto said. “If you have any family problems, please let me or (the 50th SW commander, Col. John Hyten) know. We’re here to take care of you. “We thank you for coming out, especially when it’s only five degrees outside,” the colonel said. “We’ll try to make it warmer here for you.”
