Despite erasing a 2-0 deficit, the Air Force Academy men’s soccer team could not hold off Denver, as Ben Mendozza’s goal in the 52nd minute propelled the Pioneers to a 3-2 win Nov. 14 at the University of Denver campus here. The season finale was scheduled to be played in Colorado Springs, but was moved here because of snow.

Air Force concluded its 2004 season with an 8-10-1 overall record and 4-8-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Denver improved to 12-5-1 overall and 9-3 in conference play.

Denver took an early lead as James Merriman used a free kick to pass the ball to Zack Kobilca, who then handcuffed Air Force keeper Mike Maynard with a 30-foot knuckler.

The Pioneers took what seemed to be a commanding 2-0 lead when Travis Hendricks scored off a perfect header. Christian Bowers provided the cross.

The Falcons refused to go away as Scott Muir scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to make it a 2-1 game. One minute later, Marcus Sagastume notched his seventh goal of the season off a pass from Colin Eames to tie the match up 2-2.

Denver retook the lead in the 51st minute, as Mendozza scored on a diving header off a free kick from Merriman.

Matt Bredehoft made four saves in his ninth victory of the season. Maynard recorded nine for Air Force.

The game was an intense battle as four yellow cards and one red card were issued combined. The Pioneers outshot the Falcons 22-9, and had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
