The 19th-ranked Air Force Academy water polo team recorded a pair of losses Oct. 3 to end its long weekend at the NorCal Tournament here.

The Falcons started with a narrow 8-6 loss to No. 12 California State University-Long Beach before falling to ninth-ranked Pepperdine University, 8-3, in the 15th-place match.

Air Force (2-13) went up against head coach Jeff Ehrlich’s alma mater, Long Beach, in the first game of the day, but could not overcome an early lead by the 49ers. Long Beach took a 3-2 advantage into the intermission, and outscored the Falcons 3-2 in the third period to hold Air Force looking for its second win of the weekend.

Senior captain Josh Jewett led the Air Force offense against the 49ers, tallying a pair of goals, while Murphey Morgan, Chris Nary, Clark Condict and Jeff Donaldson all added scores for the Falcons. Meanwhile, Josh Foster and Brett McCleave led Long Beach with a pair of goals each.

The Falcons, getting set to play their sixth game of the weekend, went on to face No. 9 Pepperdine in the 15th-place game. Despite 11 saves from senior goalkeeper Jared Jones, Air Force could not contain the Waves’ offense, as Pepperdine got out to a 5-2 lead in the first half. The Waves went on to claim the 8-3 victory and 15th-place at the tournament.

Scoring for Air Force in Game Two were Condict, Matt Herrera and Kyle Schafer. Matt Hahn and Matt McDonell led the Waves with two goals each.

The Falcons return to action Oct. 16 and 17 when they hold the East Meets West Tournament.
