The expanded role of North American Aerospace Defense Command headlines the latest edition of Air Force Television News. In a special “Eye on the Air Force,” Tech. Sgt. Bill Scherer goes to Rome, N.Y., to spotlight the Airmen who make up the Northeast sector of NORAD. He shows how their role has expanded from guarding from without to guarding from within; how the mission has changed dramatically since Sept. 11, 2001.

Staff Sgt. Michael Noel uses a symposium at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., to provide an update of the role of unmanned aerial vehicles in the Air Force mission, focusing on the UAV Battlelab at Nellis AFB, Nev. He looks at how Airmen there are thinking “outside the box” in developing innovations to move UAVs from a strict role of reconnaissance to bombers and fighters.

The hazardous duty of convoy escorts in Iraq results in a three-part series from Tech. Sgts. Pachari Lutke and Joy Josephson and Staff Sgt. Mike Tateishi. Sergeant Tateishi reports on Airmen in the transportation career field being trained at Camp Bullis near here while Sergeant Josephson goes to Ft. Bliss, Texas, to show how security forces Airmen are trained for their part in protecting convoys. All the training is illustrated in a story by Sergeant Lutke, who traveled with a convoy in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Dennison is at the Air Force Academy to report on the resumption of flight training at the Colorado School.

Finally, Staff Sgt. John Anderson is at McGuire AFB, N.J., and the Mets stadium in New York City to show how a KC-10 Extender boom operator and a pitcher for the Major League team swapped roles for a day.
