Air Force falls to Utah, 5-2, in men's tennis finale

The Air Force Academy men's tennis team wrapped up its 2004 regular season with a 5-2 loss to the University of Utah here April 17. The Falcons finished the season with a 12-13 overall record and an 0-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference, their first losing season since 1976.

The Utes claimed a 1-point lead early by winning two of three doubles matches. Competing at No. 1, Roeland Brateanu and Miron Mann defeated Tyler McClung and Shannon Buck, 8-5. At the No. 2 position, the duo of Tomasz Grzyb and Nick Coutts downed Trevor Johnson and Sky Jensen, 8-6. Air Force's Chris Dong and Justin Lau won the No. 3 match over Jason Yap and Ryan Scott, 8-5.

Air Force could only muster two singles victories as five of the six matches went three sets. Johnson rallied to defeat Gryzb at No. 2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, while McClung moved to 4-1 against conference opponents with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 3 singles over Mann.

At No. 1, Brateanu dispatched Buck in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, while Coutts took care of Dong in three sets at No. 4, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. At the No. 5 spot, Yap defeated Lau in the only straight set match, 6-1, 6-1, and Scott topped Robby Alexander at No. 6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The Falcons next compete at the conference championships in San Diego beginning April 29.
