Air Force Safety Center announces annual awards

Air Force Safety Center officials recently named the Air Force Safety Award recipients for fiscal 2003.

They are:

-- Secretary of the Air Force Safety Award: Category I, U.S. Air Forces in Europe; Category II, U.S. Air Force Academy.

-- Maj. Gen. Benjamin D. Foulois Memorial Award: Air Mobility Command.

-- Col. Will L. Tubbs Memorial Award for Ground Safety: Category I, Air Education and Training Command; Category II, Air Force Special Operations Command.

-- Koren Kolligian Jr. Trophy: Capt. Michael Matesick of the 421st Fighter Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.

-- Colombian Trophy: 27th Fighter Wing at Cannon AFB, N.M.

-- System of Cooperation Among the Air Forces of the Americas Flight Safety Award: 352nd Special Operations Group at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England.

-- Chief of Staff Individual Safety Award: Capt. Thomas Vance Jr., from Shaw AFB, S.C.

-- Safety Career Professional of the Year Award: Master Sgt. Douglas Crosbie of the 352nd SOG.

-- Air Force Nuclear Surety Outstanding Achievement Award: Staff Sgt. Kolbi Shartzer of the 5th Mission Support Squadron at Minot AFB, N.D.

-- Air Force Explosive Safety Outstanding Achievement Award: Capt. Darian Padilla of Pacific Air Forces headquarters at Hickam AFB, Hawaii; Master Sgt. Sean Carter of 9th Air Force at Shaw AFB.

-- Air Force Chief of Safety Outstanding Achievement Award for Ground Safety: Category I, no nominees; Category II, 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson AFB, Alaska; Category III, 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance AFB, Okla.; Category IV, 615th Air Mobility Operations Group at Travis AFB, Calif.; Category V, 725th Air Mobility Squadron at Naval Station Rota, Spain.

-- Air Force Chief of Safety Special Achievement Award: U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, Calif.; 67th Special Operations Squadron at RAF Mildenhall.

-- Air Force Chief of Safety Aircrew of Distinction Award: Maj. Sean Farrel, pilot; Capt. Antonio Jesurun, co-pilot; Capt. Jeffrey Welborn, navigator; Lt. Col. Steven Knutson, electronic warfare officer; Tech. Sgt. Mark Alden, flight engineer; Tech. Sgt. Gary Carter, loadmaster; and Staff Sgt. Daniel Beirne, gunner, all of the 16th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

-- Air Force Chief of Safety Medical Achievement Award: Master Sgt. Cheryl Gordon-Johnson of the 354th Medical Operations Squadron at Eielson AFB.

-- Air Force Space Safety Outstanding Achievement Award: Maj. Paul Mejasich of Space and Missile Command headquarters at Los Angeles AFB, Calif.

-- Air Force Directed Energy Weapons Safety Outstanding Achievement Award: Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB.
