The following is a message from Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:

“The 18th of September this year marks the 56th birthday of the U.S. Air Force -- an important milestone on both the paths of aviation history and the defense of our Nation. This year is also the centennial of powered flight, a critical milestone on the long road of human achievement.

“From the beaches of Kitty Hawk to the firestorms of World War II, our nation’s airpower grew. Brave pioneers with bold ideas pushed the science of flight to unimagined heights in less than 50 years. And on this day in 1947, with tremendous foresight, drive and determination, the early airpower leaders created a new American military service, the U.S. Air Force.

“The second 50 years of powered flight witnessed an even more dramatic acceleration in aviation and warfighting capabilities. The U.S. Air Force pushed the boundaries of flight, breaking the sound barrier and helping America leap beyond the restraints of the Earth’s atmosphere, into the vastness of space. And recently, in Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. Air Force once again demonstrated its skill as the world’s premier aerospace power.

“The Air Force tradition of research and adventure, guts and vision, endures as you continue to transform to better meet the challenges ahead.

“Today, this Air Force birthday finds America’s military engaged in the war on terrorism, performing bravely all across the globe. I am exceedingly grateful for the men and women who have served with courage and skill in the U.S. Air Force.”
