A C-17 Globemaster III takes off Nov. 11, 2013, from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The C-17 was requested to support Operation Damayan to supply aid to the areas in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan. C-17 aircrews will transport supplies, personnel, or evacuees, depending on what the mission requires. The C-17 is assigned to the 517th Airlift Squadron.

The fire departments train together regularly so that they can efficiently perform rescue operations together in the event of an emergency. Brittan's home station is Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England, and he is a native of Lindenhurst, N.Y. Brittan is a 376th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter.

The base tested its ability to generate aircraft under hostile field conditions.
