Warrior CARE event begins at Andrews

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. (AFNS) -- Opening ceremonies for the Northeast Region Warrior CARE Event took place here Nov. 16.

More than 75 wounded, ill or injured service members from different branches of the military are here to take part in the weeklong event as part of Warrior Care Month.

"Warrior Care Month is an important (Defense Department)-wide effort to increase awareness, programs and resources available to wounded, ill and injured service members, their families and those who support them," said Brig. Gen. Lenny J. Richoux, the Air Force Services director. "This year's theme is 'Show of Strength.'"

The Warrior CARE event offers participants caregiver support and recovering Airman mentorship training and adaptive and rehabilitative sports training. CARE stands for:

C - Caregiver Support Program
A - Adaptive and Rehabilitative Sports Program
R - Recovering Airmen Mentorship Program
E - Employment and Career Readiness Program

"At the end of the day, your service still continues, your country still needs you to serve, your family still needs you to serve and this is that opportunity," said Bob Lujano, a Paralympic athlete and guest speaker. "Participating in an adaptive sport gives any person, whatever type of ability, an opportunity to improve his or her life, mindset and body."

The event also provides employment and career readiness guidance along with music and art therapy.
