Humanitarian aid

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan -- Airmen here load equipment and supplies bound for Southeast Asia as part of disaster relief following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Dec. 26 off the coast of Indonesia causing tsunami waves that have affected 12 countries. More than 36,000 meals and four aircraft pallets of fresh water were processed through the base's cargo area. OVER FLORIDA -- Between penetrations of Hurricane Charley's eye in a C-130H aircraft, Lt. Col. Roy Deatherage discusses weather issues with 2nd Lt. Eileen Govan. Colonel Deatherage is a weather instructor, and Lieutenant Govan is a flight meteorologist. Both Airmen are assigned to the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, better known as the "Hurricane Hunters." The 46th Weather Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., monitored Hurricane Dennis -- in July 2005 -- from the time it became a hurricane in the Caribbean Sea. Weather forecasters gave period updates to base battle staff members sheltered in the Air Armament Center headquarters building here. With hurricane season right around the corner, from June through November, Eglin held a three-day exercise May 15 through May 17, 2006, called "Hurricane Lisette," to prepare for the next big storm.
