1950's -- The 52-A Stratofortress, the first production model of a series of long range bombers, takes off from Boeing Field, Wash., on its maiden flight Aug. 5, 1954. It is powered by eight Pratt and Whitney Aircraft J-57 turbojet engines, each rated in 10,000 pounds of thrust class. The new bomber has a wing span of 185 feet, length of 156 feet, tail height of 48 feet and gross weight of more than 350,000 pounds.
