Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, the Kentucky adjutant general, speaks about the sacrifice of the late Capt. Merlin R. "Bob" Kehrer, a former Kentucky Air Guard pilot, during a ceremony April 16, 2011, at the Kentucky Air National Guard Base in Louisville, Ky., to present the sons and daughter of the Airman a posthumous Prisoner of War Medal. Captain Kehrer was a young lieutenant and P-51 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps when his plane was shot down over enemy territory Feb. 24, 1944, and he was held in a German prisoner of war camp for 13 months.
