1st Lt. Merlin R. "Bob" Kehrer was a P-51 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps when his plane was shot down over enemy territory Feb. 24, 1944. He spent 13 months in a German prisoner of war camp before returning to the United States to help establish the Kentucky Air National Guard. (Courtesy photo)
