AIR FORCE PHOTOS

Away we go

The crew of a ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules from the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing takes off July 28, 2010, from a remote science research site on Greenland's ice sheet. The 109th AW is the only military unit to fly such aircraft and has flown missions to Greenland since 1975. The unit now provides airlift support to the National Science Foundation's polar research program there. (Defense Department photo/Fred W. Baker III)
