Polar research

Scientists and others wave goodbye to fellow workers July 28, 2010, at a remote science research site in Greenland. The New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing is the only military unit in the world to fly the ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules and has flown missions to Greenland since 1975. The unit now provides airlift support to the National Science Foundation's polar research program here. (Department of Defense photo/Fred W. Baker III)
