AIR FORCE PHOTOS

How low can they go

Col. Andy Hockman, Capt. Carl Miller and Staff Sgt. John Eller brief their communication plan Jan. 3 for an upcoming low-level flight at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. Col. Hockman is the 15th Operations Group commander and Capt. Miller and Sgt. Eller are from the 535th Airlift Squadron. In a world of increasingly sophisticated air defenses, the United States needs to maintain a first-class air force. In combat, aircraft often operate at altitudes as low as 100 feet and at high airspeeds to defeat ground missile radars and avoid sophisticated surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery, and enemy fighters.
