Hypersonic vehicle completes inaugural flight
A Navy-supplied rocket propels the Re-Entry Structures Experiment into space following a 6:45 a.m. launch Sept. 20 at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. It reached an altitude of 95,000 feet at Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound, or 3,800 miles per hour). It then descended to the desert in two pieces, which safely landed more than 21 miles north of its launch point. (U.S. Air Force photo)
