Exercise Lightning Response in 1986
U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopters move "wounded" Airmen from Aviano Air Base, Italy to Vicenza, Italy during Exercise Lightning Response in 1986. Prevalent terrorist activity throughout the Mediterranean in the 1980s spurred U.S. Air Forces in Europe to revise its quick-response medical organizations. From June 3 through 12, Aviano Air Base hosted several U.S. Air Force and Army medical teams in responding to a simulated terrorist attack. (Courtesy photo)
