"Castle Coombe Mess" cup donated
Lt. Gen. Robert J. Elder Jr., Eighth Air Force commander, accepts the donation of one of the nine Eaker Bowl cups from Charles Jones Jr. Mr. Jones' father, Lt. Col. Charles Jones Sr., was one of the nine original members of the Castle Coombe Mess established by General Ira C. Eaker, who first commanded Eighth Air Force in England during World War II. Two former Eighth Air Force commanders, retired Lt. Gen. Edgar S. Harris Jr. (left) and retired Lt. Gen. E.G. "Buck" Shuler Jr. joined General Elder in accepting the donation. This is the fifth silver cup donated to Eighth Air Force, with the remaining four cups kept by respective family members as cherished mementos of their link to World War II history.
