WWII bomber crew awarded Distinguished Flying Cross
American flags flown over the U.S. Capitol were presented to surviving members of the "Flak Man" B-24 Liberator crew and the relatives of deceased members April 24 in Washington, D.C., by Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Fla. Each crew member was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross., 63 years after a daring mission in Ploesti, Italy. On July 15, 1944, the bomber crew encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire and as a result lost one engine. They still managed to complete their mission to bomb the Nazi's oil refinery lifeline in Romania. They were shot down the next day while participating in a raid over Austria and were taken prisoners of war. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Cohen A. Young)
