National Guard kicks off Vigilant Guard in Iowa
Army Lt. Col. Tim Glen speaks with guardsmen and state and local participants in Vigilant Guard Iowa June 18 in Des Moines, Iowa. The National Guard Bureau sponsored exercise is designed to test local, state, federal and military responders to perform roles and responsibilities related to homeland defense in support of the governor and the Iowa Emergency Management Agency, in the event of a catastrophic emergency within the state. This portion of the exercise was in response to a simulated, domestic terrorist attack using a train derailment to release chemical agents. Colonel Glen is the 71st Civil Support Team, Iowa National Guard commander. (National Guard Bureau photo/Master Sgt. Mike R. Smith)
