Winter race
KNIK, ALASKA (AFPN) -- Lt. Col. Michele Provost distributes booties for sled dogs before the start of the Knik 200 Sled Dog Race. It was the first time the colonel participated in a dog sled race. She completed the 200 mile race in 29 hours and 5 minutes, including a six-hour mandatory rest for the dogs. Colonel Provost is an orthopedic surgeon with the 3rd Medical Group at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. The dog sled team belongs to Maj. Tom Knolmeayer, Elmendorf's chief of surgery. He and his dogs completed last year's Iditarod Sled Dog Race -- a 1,100 mile race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Keith Brown)
