Tiger by the tale
LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. -- Airman 1st Class John Purser sits in a vintage P-40 Warhawk in a hangar here during a Flying Tiger reunion June 1 to 6. The Flying Tigers were originally known as the American Volunteer Group that was recruited in 1941 to help China defeat Japan. The group's Chinese supporters referred to them as the Flying Tigers, and the Tigers evolved into the 23rd Fighter Group in 1942. Airman Purser is assigned to the 23rd Maintenance Squadron at Pope Air Force Base, N.C. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Cassandra J. Locke)
