Truman signs Air Force Day proclamation
1946 -- President Truman signs the Presidential Proclamation designating August 1, 1946 as Air Force Day. With him are Gen. Carl A. Spaatz, Commanding General of the Army Air Forces, and Lt. Gen. Ira C. Eaker, Deputy Commander of the AAF. On Aug. 1, the Air force will celebrate the 39th Anniversary of its inception in 1907 as the Aeronautical Division in the Office of the Chief Signal Officer of the United States Army, when the Air Force comprised three men and no airplanes.
