Wilford Hall doctors perform lifesaving procedure on newborn
Alexander Gardner is intubated while his body is still in his mother's uterus at Wilford Hall Medical Center Feb. 27. The rare procedure, call EXIT, for ex-utero intrapartum treatment, was performed by an Air Force medical team to open the baby's airway which was blocked by a large tumor on his neck. The baby is the son of Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Gardner, assigned to 23rd Armored Calvary Regiment at Ft. Hood, Texas, and is recovering in the Wilford Hall Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
