Air Force to save millions by prepositioning weapons
Tech. Sgt. Chris Atkinson shows Staff Sgt. Joseph Lopez the dust cover on his M-16 rifle during a force protection arming drill at Joint Base Balad, Iraq. Beginning with air and space expeditionary force cycle 7 and 8 in January and February, more than 3,000 deploying Airmen will get their weapons from the person they are replacing within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility instead of bringing weapons with them from their home stations. A U.S. Air Forces Central weapons prepositioning initiative will save the service $1.2 million every four months and will make travel to and from the area of responsibility easier for deploying Airmen by reducing the amount of baggage they need to bring.
