Arresting development

Tech. Sgt. Randy Thibeau and Master Sgt. Gerald Kiger hold a stake hammer as it pounds a four-foot stake into the ground March 12 at Balad Air Base, Iraq. The team drove 168 steaks into the ground to hold the entire arresting barrier system in place. If a fighter aircraft experiences malfunctioning landing gear, the pilot can a drop a hook to catch a cable attached to the barrier system, which slows the aircraft and enables a smoother landing. Sergeant Thibeau is deployed from Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.; Sergeant Kiger is deployed from Yokota Air Base, Japan. Both are 332nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron power production technicians. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Julianne Showalter)
