Providing safer blood products faster to wounded warriors

Army Spc. Lamar Elwell inserts a needle into the arm of Tech. Sgt. Jeff Ribelin before starting the platelet donation process Jan. 28 at the Air Force Theater Hospital at Balad Air Base, Iraq. The process of blood platelet donation differs from whole-blood donation because the patient is hooked up to a machine that processes the blood, extracting the red blood cells. The red blood cells are collected along with a small amount of blood plasma; the rest of the blood is returned to the patient with a small amount of anticoagulant agent. Specialist Elwell is a 153rd Blood Support Detachment medical lab technician deployed from Fort Lewis, Washington. Sergeant Ribelin is a 332nd Expeditionary Medical Support Squadron biomedical repair technician deployed from MacDill Air Force Base, Fla. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Julianne Showalter)
