Providing a lifeline

Lt. Col. Greg Schumacher explains how to apply an external fixator on a patient to Senior Airman Wallace Cleveland during Exercise Pacific Lifeline Feb. 5 at Kona International Airport, Hawaii. Colonel Schumacher, a staff orthopedic surgeon, and Airman Cleveland, a surgical technician, are from the 3rd Medical Group from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. Pacific Lifeline is a total force exercise staging from three locations within the Hawaiian Islands. It provides approximately 900 Department of Defense members a test environment to rapidly deploy and provide time-critical services in the wake of a simulated natural disaster.
