Operation Iraqi Freedom

Soldiers and Airmen patrol the perimeter of Joint Base Balad, Iraq during Operation Lewis and Clark Sept. 11. Operation Lewis and Clark was a joint patrol in which Air Force security forces Airmen were introduced to Balad's outer perimeter. Since Americans began operating from Balad in 2003, the Army has been responsible for base security. The 332nd Expeditionary Security Forces Group will soon be the largest security forces unit deployed in combat to defend an air base since Vietnam. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Aaron Allmon)
