Zabul team combats malnutrition, unsafe water
Capt. (Dr.) James J. Arnold shows the staff at the district hospital in Shajoy, Afghanistan, how to operate a simple water purification system Aug. 10. The system uses saltwater to extract chlorine which can be then used to kill bacteria and parasites in drinking water. Dr. Arnold is a family medicine doctor and is deployed to the Zabul Provincial Reconstruction Team. One of the goals of this team is to reduce the extremely high infant mortality rate in the region, and one of the top causes is contaminated drinking water. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt.
