An Atlas V rocket carrying the GPS II-7 satellite for the Air Force launches Aug. 1, 2014, from Cape Canaveral’s Space Launch Complex-41, Fla. This was the second successful launch in just four days from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. GPS IIF-7 is the seventh in a series of next-generation GPS satellites and will join a worldwide timing and navigation system utilizing 24 satellites in six different planes, with a minimum of four satellites per plane positioned in orbit approximately 11,000 miles above the Earth’s surface.
