U.S. Marine Corps veteran Richard Starr waves an American flag as members of Joint Base Charleston march by while participating in the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Hospital Annual Veterans Day parade Nov. 8, 2014, in Charleston, S.C. The origins of the holiday date back to President Woodrow Wilson, who proclaimed Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I. The armistice between Germany and the Allied nations that ended WWI was signed on that day and a ceasefire went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
