Staff Sgt. Walter Quering was drafted to serve in World War II in 1943. He became a waist gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, and was assigned to the Eighth Air Force’s 838th Bombardment Squadron commanded by Brig. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle. In 1945, he was wounded by German anti-aircraft fire, which ended his combat role in WWII. Quering was awarded the Legion of Honor medal from France for his part in the country’s liberation.
