Tanker Directorate team installs ADS-B Out on KC-135 fleet
A Michigan Air National Guard KC-135T from the 171st Air Refueling Squadron at Selfridge ANG Base, Mich. flies during a refueling mission over the central United States March 6, 2020. The KC-135 Stratotanker fleet received the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Out, or ADS-B Out, upgrade. The upgrade, mandated by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, allows the fleet of 396 KC-135s to operate in controlled airspace while the system broadcasts the precise position and location of aircraft in real time, giving air traffic control better visibility to track and manage, while enhancing safety by providing aircrew more situational awareness of nearby aircraft.
