Experimental test pilot and war hero who evaded escape during World War II, Brig. Gen. Robert “Bob” Cardenas flew more than 60 different aircraft during his career. He was also a combat leader and commander of Air Force Special Operations Force. Most notably, Cardenas piloted the B-29 launch aircraft that released the X-1 experimental rocket plane in which then Capt. Charles “Chuck” Yeager became the first human to fly faster than the speed of sound in 1947. (U.S. Air Force graphic by Jim Masie)
